Michael Jowett B.S.c(Hons.), F.S.M.C., Optometrist

Michael Jowett

Michael studied Ophthalmic Optics at Bradford University where the training had a strong emphasis on the clinical aspects of Optometry. One of his particular interests is in the early detection of glaucoma.

He started at Coverdales Opticians in 1979, which was based then in Colliergate, to work with Optometrist Mrs Christine Harrison. He replaced her business partner, Mr Richard Coverdale.

Michael then took over the running of Coverdales Opticians in 1979 from Mrs Harrison and relocated the business in 1990 to 53 Walmgate.

When he qualified, Optometrists were not allowed to diagnose eye disease or abnormality, only just to recognise abnormality and refer. Now with continued education and training, ophthalmic diagnosis is encouraged by Doctors and Ophthalmologists in order to help practices deliver the best service for our people in North Yorkshire.

Michael has always believed in providing competitively priced, quality eyecare to the whole community in a professional, caring and family-orientated environment. He is really proud of the excellent reputation the practice has built with local residents.

However after 40 years of practice, Michael has retired from day to day eye testing and has entrusted this role to Josephine Johnson. You will see him on the premises from time to time, but his role is now more managerial.
